About Arjan

As a historian, Arjan is currently mainly interested in the history of intoxicants and drug policy. Since January 2016, Arjan works as a Phd candidate at the University of Amsterdam where he researches local drug policies in the Netherlands since 1945.

Arjan started his study of History in 2007 at the University of Utrecht, where he gained his Bachelor in 2011. During his Bachelor, he also studied at the Freie Universität Berlin through the Erasmus program. Back in the Netherlands, Arjan proceeded with the Master International Relations in Historical Perspective at the University of Utrecht.

The period between the end of his Master and the start of his PhD, Arjan dabbled in the world of bitcoin as co-founder of news website Coincourant.nl (currently offline) and worked in the information technology and pension fund sector.

Next to his academical activities, Arjan can often be found in a swimming pool, where he is currently training to cross the English Channel in relay in the summer of 2020 and the IJsselmeer solo in 2021.
